got my first pair of prosthetic legs. in the morning she said to my brother he must put ofrn his shoes and i must put on my legs and that's the last she wants to hear of any sort of disability. >> joining us, mary carillo, nbc news and sports contributor. good to have you on "the ed show" tonight. >> pleasure, ed. but i'm sorry we have to be talking about this tragedy. >> it is a terrible tragedy. a shocker to south africa, no doubt. and from everything i've read about oscar, it's so out of character. what is your read on this story? >> i got to spend days with oscar pistorius in the months before the olympic games. he hadn't even yet qualified for the olympics. he's been a long-time paralympian, but he wanted to compete in the able-bodied olympics. we were using up his time, days of, it you know, interviewing him, watching him train, watching him prepare for the games, and he could not have been more modest, more self-effacing. so soft spoken. i mean, he was so patient with us, because we were asking a lot of him.
